Starting School in September 2024...

Welcome to Walford Nursery & Primary School

We are delighted that you and your child are joining Walford Nursery & Primary School this coming September.  On behalf of the staff, governors, children and parents, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Walford family.

We hope that the information on this page will answer many of the questions that you have about your child starting school with us in September.

Transition

We will be talking to pre-school and nursery settings, as we always do, in order to find out where your child is in their learning.  We will also be talking to you directly to find out about your child's preferences; things they particularly enjoy or find difficult etc.  These conversations usually take place during our Induction mornings at school in June / July and during home visits in early June.

The link below contain some useful resources to support your child with transition.

Early Years Foundation Stage ~ Reception Class

The Early Years is all about your child learning through play.  Your child will spend most of their day in school accessing the continuous provision and following their own interests, both indoors and outdoors.  The areas within the classroom will be carefully set up by adults who have taken into account your child's interests and next steps in learning.  The children will access these areas with support and guidance from teaching staff.

During the day, your child will take part in some short adult-led activities focused around Communication and Language, Phonics (Read, Write, Inc) and Maths.  Although adult-led, these will be fun and engaging sessions, planned specifically with the children's interests and needs in mind.

There are ample opportunities throughout the year for outdoor play, as we believe this is vital for children's development.  Reception children also have the opportunity to attend Forest School sessions, alongside their daily use of the class Mud Kitchen.

What to Expect, When?

The attached booklet is to help you as a parent/carer find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent/carer know what to expect during these vitally important years by focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS.
